Drought forces partial closure of Leeds & Liverpool Canal
Managers Update 23 Aug 10
The reservoirs supporting the west side of the Leeds Liverpool Canal are showing signs of improvement. The demand on the east side of the canal during the busiest time of year has stood the test of time after drought enforced circumstances. We hope once the summer holidays come to an end we can return over the summit pound into Lancashie.
However there might be roots of business growing after we make the best of a poor hand. Cruising across the pennines from Hapton to Apperley, Lancashire to Yorkshire vice a versa on a one way deal could be possible once the canal is fully operational. We hope to finalize this for our customers and advertise this great opportunity in the coming weeks.
We have not needed to cancel any holiday nor has any customer requested to cancel a holiday. We are determined to provide a professional service to our customers in difficult times and our extra efforts are rewarded by your comments, we thank you for those comments.
Managing Directors Message
British Waterways Statement:
The planned closure of almost half of Britain’s longest man-made waterway – the 127-mile long Leeds & Liverpool Canal – will take effect from Monday 2 August, and will close for boating for 60 miles from Wigan in Lancashire to Gargrave in North Yorkshire.
The remainder of the canal will stay open for navigation, however there will be a restricted lock schedule to minimize impact on neighbouring waterways.
With some of the worst drought conditions for 100 years British Waterways has today announced that it is taking the highly unusual step of partially closing a canal in the North West.
